I hear this a lot:
“I know I should make more video, but I genuinely have no idea what to film.”
ㅤ
Usually, there is plenty to film. It just doesn’t feel interesting because it’s your normal working day.
Preparing for a client. Packing an order. Opening your laptop. Writing notes. Setting something up. Showing part of your process. Answering a question you’ve answered approximately 47 times already.
To you, that is just work.
ㅤ
To someone following your business, it can be useful, interesting or reassuring because it shows them what you actually do and how you do it.
ㅤ
Video also does not have to mean talking to camera every five minutes.
ㅤ
You can use B-roll, text, voiceover, screen recordings, close-ups, behind-the-scenes footage or a simple montage. Much less “presenter mode”, much more capturing what is already happening.
ㅤ
That is a big part of what we’re covering in next week’s Unleashed Content Club workshop, Create Better Video Content on Your Phone.
ㅤ
We’ll look at what to film, how to plan the clips you actually need, how to make the footage better, and how to edit it without disappearing into your phone for the rest of the afternoon.
ㅤ
What do you find hardest at the moment: knowing what to film, being on camera, or editing the thing afterwards?
Confession: my Canva is an absolute mess. 😂
ㅤ
I’ve been working on my Canva workshop prep this week and, because part of the session is about making Canva quicker and easier to use, I thought I should probably take a proper look at my own organisation first.
ㅤ
That went well. 🤦
ㅤ
I currently have 57 folders sitting at the top level.
ㅤ
They’re named in several different ways, there are duplicates, folders Canva has helpfully created when I’ve resized things, old client bits, random things I clearly intended to sort out later and a few folders where I genuinely have no idea what past Becky was thinking.
ㅤ
There has clearly been a system at some point.
ㅤ
I’m just not completely sure what it was. 😂
ㅤ
It did make me laugh, especially as I’m about to stand in front of a room and talk about getting your Canva organised.
ㅤ
But it’s also a really useful reminder for the workshop.
ㅤ
Because making Canva quicker and easier isn’t always about learning another clever feature or shortcut. Sometimes it’s being able to find your logo without going on a small archaeological dig, knowing where your templates are, or finding that brilliant design you made six months ago without scrolling through 847 versions of “Instagram Post”.
ㅤ
None of this is the exciting bit of Canva, but it makes a huge difference when you’re creating content regularly.
ㅤ
So before I head to the New Forest on 20 October to deliver a Canva Masterclass for @newforestbp, I’m apparently doing the digital equivalent of clearing out the junk drawer first.
ㅤ
If you’re coming along, you can see whether I’ve actually managed to practise what I preach by then. 😂
ㅤ
Please tell me I’m not the only one. How organised is your Canva really: beautifully filed, vaguely under control, or absolute chaos?
Future Becky did poorly Becky a favour.
I’m currently full of cold, my head feels like it’s stuffed with cotton wool, and creating my own Instagram content is fairly low down my list of things I fancy doing.
To top it off, Beanz is under the weather too and is off to the vets tomorrow. Apparently we’ve decided to be poorly together. 🙄🐶
So this isn’t the post I had planned.
But thankfully, past Becky left me with plenty to work with.
I’ve got a bank of photos from photoshoots. I’ve got ideas written down. I’ve got a content plan I can dip into rather than having to start from scratch.
Which means tonight’s content can simply be: pick a photo, share a thought, post it.
No Reel. No elaborate carousel. No trying to force creativity out of a brain that would currently quite like a nap.
And actually, this is exactly why I bang on about making social media sustainable.
Your content plan shouldn’t only work when you’re feeling motivated, have loads of time and everything is going swimmingly.
It needs to work when work gets busy, life happens, the dog needs the vet… or you just feel a bit rubbish.
Sometimes consistency looks like a beautifully planned Reel.
Sometimes it looks like using a photo you already have and choosing the easy post.
Tonight, I’m very much choosing the easy post. 💜
What does your “easy post” look like when you haven’t got the time, energy or brainpower for the thing you’d originally planned?
One of the reasons video content can feel like such a faff?
ㅤ
We treat every Reel as a completely separate job:
💡 Come up with an idea
📱 Work out what to film
🎥 Set everything up
✂️ Edit it
😮💨 Repeat the whole thing next time
ㅤ
Instead, try thinking about building a bank of useful clips.
ㅤ
The next time you have your phone set up, don’t just film the one thing you need.
Capture a few extra shots:
✅ A close-up.
✅ A wider angle.
✅ You doing the thing.
✅ A bit of behind-the-scenes.
✅ Something you could use as B-roll later.
ㅤ
You don’t even need to know exactly what you’ll use every clip for yet.
ㅤ
Over time, you start building a library of footage you can pull from rather than starting from scratch every single time you want to create a video.
And that’s one of the things we’ll be getting practical with in this month’s Unleashed Content Club workshop:
ㅤ
📱 Create Better Video Content on Your Phone
ㅤ
We’ll look at what to film, how to plan your clips, simple ways to make them look better, how to batch useful footage and how to bring it all together using Edits.
ㅤ
Because creating more video doesn’t have to mean spending more of your week filming it.
September was a bit of a big one. 🐾💜
Purple Dog turned 13, which still feels slightly ridiculous to say out loud. Thirteen years of self-employment, changing things, learning things, getting things wrong, adapting, and somehow still being here doing a job I genuinely love.
Possibly just as significantly, I took a proper two-week break.
Not a “technically on holiday but still checking emails and doing the odd bit of work” break either. An actual one.
I spent a few days on my own in a restful little off-grid cabin, followed by a trip to Anglesey with Matt and Beanz. Beanz, unsurprisingly, absolutely loved it and seemed very happy with the combination of new walks, sea air and general holiday attention.
For the first time in a long time, I properly switched off. It turns out the business did not collapse in my absence, which is always reassuring.
I’ve also been making more of an effort to get back into wild swimming this month. It’s one of those things I know is really good for me, but which had quietly slipped further and further down the list when life got busy.
Then it was back to work, and September ended up being a pretty varied month.
🎬 I delivered a workshop all about short-form video
💡 Headed to Bristol for Uplift Live and a day full of ideas, conversations and learning
💬 Spoke about LinkedIn at the latst @4ivy event
💜 Celebrated 13 years of Purple Dog along the way
My word for this year was balance, and September probably came closer to what I meant by that than most months have.
There was work. There were interesting things happening. There was also rest, sea swimming, time away, Beanz living his best Anglesey life, and quite a lot of staring at nice views without feeling the need to be productive.
I’d quite like to take a bit more of that into October.
What are you taking into the new month? 👇
Think you need to be talking to camera every time you create a Reel? You really don’t.
ㅤ
One of the easiest things you can do is start building a little library of everyday B-roll.
ㅤ
Not staged. Not complicated. Just useful snippets of you actually doing your work.
ㅤ
So, here’s your challenge for this week 👆
ㅤ
Don’t worry about turning any of it into content yet. Just capture a few short clips as you go about your normal working day.
ㅤ
Then, when you DO want to make a Reel, you’re not starting with an empty camera roll wondering what on earth to film.
ㅤ
And if you’re wondering how long your clips should be, how to make them look better, how to plan what you need and how to edit them together… that’s exactly what we’ll be getting into in this month’s Unleashed Content Club workshop:
ㅤ
📱 Create Better Video Content on Your Phone
ㅤ
We’ll be planning, filming and editing simple social media videos without the fancy kit or complicated editing.

A slightly bittersweet one today. 💜
I had the pleasure of speaking at the final 4ivy Women luncheon at MansionHouse, Llansteffan, sharing some of the latest changes on LinkedIn and, more importantly, how we can use the platform without it becoming another overwhelming thing on the to-do list.
We talked about what’s changed, what’s worth paying attention to, looking beyond likes when measuring what’s working, and why commenting and conversations are still such an important part of LinkedIn.
One of the points I really wanted people to leave with was that you don’t always need to create more content to be more visible.
Sometimes the right comment, in the right conversation, can do far more for building familiarity and relationships than another post on your own profile.
But today wasn’t just about LinkedIn.
I’m sad that Four Ivy is coming to an end. I’ve always been a big believer in women supporting women in business, and being part of this group has brought so many brilliant women into my world.
There are people I first met through 4ivy who I now work with, regularly bump into at other events, cheer on from the sidelines and, most importantly, now call friends.
So it felt very fitting to spend the final luncheon talking about something I believe in just as strongly online as I do offline:
Business grows through conversations, relationships and showing up for other people.
And while Four Ivy might be ending, I know plenty of those relationships won’t be. 💜
Be honest. When you open Instagram with every intention of “doing some engagement”… how quickly does it turn into scrolling? 👀
ㅤ
There’s a big difference between posting, scrolling and engaging, but it’s very easy to convince ourselves that time spent on social media automatically equals time spent building our visibility.
It doesn’t.
ㅤ
In next week’s Unleashed Content Club workshop, we’re looking at what meaningful engagement actually looks like and, importantly, how to make it manageable.
ㅤ
We’ll cover encouraging conversations around your own content, joining other conversations naturally, using comments and DMs more purposefully and creating an engagement routine that fits around running your business.
Beyond Posting: Building Better Social Media Engagement
ㅤ
And before then, tell me below:
👇 Which one do you think you spend the MOST time doing: POSTING, SCROLLING or ENGAGING?
12 years of Purple Dog! 🎉💜
I’m not entirely sure how that happened, but apparently I’ve now been running my little business for TWELVE years.
And when your business works in social media, 12 years is quite a long time. 😂
I’ve seen platforms come and go, algorithms change more times than I could possibly count, the rise of Stories, Reels, TikTok, Threads, AI... and probably enough Instagram updates to last me a lifetime.
But the thing I’m most proud of isn’t keeping up with all of that.
It’s the businesses I’ve worked with, the people I’ve trained, the clients who’ve trusted me with their social media, and the fact that 12 years later, I still genuinely love helping businesses make sense of it all.
Purple Dog has changed a lot over those 12 years. So have I. And I’m pretty sure there are more changes to come.
For today though, I’m going to celebrate making it to 12. 🎉
Although, as you can see, Beanz appears to have taken responsibility for the cake. 🙄🐶
Here’s to whatever year 13 has in store. 💜
Nearly 12 years in business and I still get slightly nervous about going on holiday. 😂
ㅤ
There’s always that slightly ridiculous week beforehand where you try to fit three weeks’ work into five days, knowing there’ll still be plenty waiting when you get back.
ㅤ
But I think one thing that has changed over the years is my idea of what being successful in business actually looks like.
ㅤ
When I started Purple Dog, I probably measured success by how busy I was. Saying yes to opportunities, taking on more work and generally keeping everything moving.
ㅤ
These days, success looks more like having time and space outside the business too.
ㅤ
Which is quite timely, because I’m about to put my out of office on and disappear for a couple of weeks.
ㅤ
First, three nights in a cabin @erwainescapes by myself with no internet, phone signal or TV. Possibly a slightly extreme way of stopping myself checking my emails, but apparently needs must. 😂
ㅤ
Then I’m off to Anglesey with the hubbie and Beanz for books, walks, sea swims, wine and hopefully not much productivity whatsoever.
ㅤ
I spend a lot of time telling other business owners they don’t need to be online all the time.
ㅤ
Apparently I occasionally need reminding too.
ㅤ
So, out of office on.
ㅤ
The inbox will survive.
ㅤ
Probably. 😂
