How to make social media less overwhelming

For many small business owners, social media tends to fall down on the priority list. So here are 10 tips to make social media less overwhelming so that you save time and use it effectively.

1. Set yourself a goal

Are you on social media because that's what people tell you you should do for your business? It's a common mistake, especially for new businesses. But you need to think about what you want to get out of your time on social media and be specific about it.

For example, “ I would like to get one new client a month through LinkedIn” or “ I would like to have 5 conversations a month with new contacts made on Instagram” or "I'd like 10 sign up's to my lead magnet this month on Facebook"

2. Prioritise

You can't be on every channel so based on your goals and who your target audience is pick one or two channels to focus on and deliver value there.

3. Limit your time on social media

Be mindful of how much time you spend on social media. It can be difficult to not fall into an internet hole when you open your social media apps.

Before you open the app make a checklist of what you need to do on that platform. eg. engage with follows, check your analytics, craft a post. That way you can focus your time productively. You can also set a time limit and set an alarm on your phone.

4. Plan

It's much easier to create content when you set aside time to work on it in batches. Schedule time in your calendar each month to prepare all your content for the following month.

6. Use a scheduling tool

Using a scheduling tool will help you be consistent. If you schedule all the content you plan each month, all you need to do daily the rest of the month is engage with your community.

5. Have a brand photography shoot

Use a photographer to help you build a content library of photos for your business. You can source some relevant stock photos but you'll make a better connection and stand out more with your own unique imagery.

7. Engagement is key!

Interacting with your followers is crucial. Don't forget to allocate time to this - make sure you like, comment, and support your followers. Social media is about the conversation and community after all.

8. Turn off your notifications

Don't get distracted from other work by social media notifications. Instead set aside time for interacting, including the time after you schedule a post.

9. Try new things

As platforms roll out new features, don't be afraid to try them out. Often new features will help you have more fun and be more authentic with your followers.

Bonus Pro tip: As the features roll out the platform tends to push those using them up in the algorithm too so there's more chance of exposure.

10. Be yourself!

Be true to yourself and your followers will trust and connect with you much easier as they get to know you and understand you. Make sure you include in your content posts that show your personality and that can help you create a connection with your followers.
